Restaurant Neighbor Award: 2007 Finalist

Massachusetts

The Charlie Horse

West Bridgewater, MA

After the death of her husband on Sept. 11, 2001, Christie Coombs created a foundation in his memory to help local families impacted by the terrorist attacks. One of the Jeffrey Coombs Memorial Foundation's first and most loyal supporters was The Charlie Horse Restaurants. After hosting a successful auction for the foundation, owner Richard Barrett and his business partner, Ed Stewart, organized another auction. This event included food stations, two comedy acts, appearances by two Boston-area professional athletes, a live band, and more than 200 auction and raffle items. With the help of the $80,000 raised from the auctions and ticket sales, the foundation has helped families pay for funerals and medical bills, groceries and restaurant meals and grief counseling. The money also paid for scholarships to students.
